Ruwanweli Maha Seya

Ruwanweli Maha Seya is the most venerate Buddhist Temple in Sri Lanka as well as all over the world.  In addition to that  Ruwanweli Maha Seya is considered very special for its architectural qualities.  It was built by King Dutugemunu  in 140 B.C.  King Dutugemunu became the king  of all Sri Lanka after a war in which the Chola King Elara, was defeated.  Ruwanweli Maha Seya also known as Mahathupa, Swarnamali Chaitya, Suvarnamali Mahaceti and Rathnamali Dagaba.  King Dutugamunu was not fortunate enough to see the completion of the stupa. When the king was ill, he sent his brother to complete the remaining work of the stupa.  When the King Dutugamunu was on the death bed he wanted to see this stupa and his brother covered the whole dome in white cloth and constructed the upper part of the stupa in bamboo and paint it in gold colour and carried the king to the stupa to show the competed  stupa. After the kings death King  Saddhatissa finished the remaining work.

Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi

The oldest tree of the world with a written history is the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi of Anuradhapura.  Lord Buddha attained Samma Sambodhi, enlightenment, seated with his back against it under the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree of Buddhagaya, India. The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi of Anuradhapura was the southern branch of this sacred Bodhi tree.   Because of this sacred Bodhi Tree, Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi Tree, Jaya Sri Maha Bodhin Wahanse, Anuradhapura has been nominated as a World Heritage by the UNESCO.

Mihintale Mountain

Mihinthale Mountain was the place where the Arahath Mahinda Thero (Mihindu Thero) and King Devanam Piya Tissa met each other which inaugurated the presence of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.  After that  venerable monks headed by Arahath Mahinda Thero used Mihinthale as their residence.  Soon after their arrival with the help of Kings  the sanctuary housed a multitude of with monastic buildings-stupas, Uposathgharas,  Bodhigharas- to serve the monks.  There is a place called “Vedahala”,   the hospital at the foot of the mountain at Mihintale.

Twin Baths (Kuttam Pokuna)

Kuttam Pokuna, bathing twin ponds were built by monks of Abhayagiri Monastery between 6th and 8th century.  The twin pools were designed by ancient Sri Lankans with  extraordinary architecture.  Underground ducts have been used to transfer water in and out of the pool.  Even though two pools look identical, one outsizes the other by about 12 m (39 ft) in length.  Steps of the pool are decorated with Punkalas.  Clean water pass through the lion’s head to the pool.
