Kaluthara Bodiya

Prince Wickrema Pandya planted the Sacred Kaluthara Bodhi Tree at Kaluthara Bodhi premises in 1042 AD. Prince Wickrema Pandya served as a viceroy in Kalutara area during that period. Kaluthara Bodhiya is very important for Buddhists because the Bodhi Tree sprouted from a sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura. Anuradhapura Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya is a sapling of Main Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in India, place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. |

Gangathilaka Viharaya * Religious site dress code matters
Gangathilaka Viharaya is very popular among Buddhists because it consists of smaller Dagabas inside the main Dagaba which is an unique feature. The interior of Dagaba is beautifully painted and decorated with Jathaka Katha (Stories of Lord Buddha’s previous births). Gangathilaka Viharaya was built in 1960. |

Richmond Castle was built in 1896 and is a two-storied building with 15 rooms, 99 doors and 34 windows. The design of castle is a mix of British and Indian styles and it is believed the plan of castle is a copy of an Indian Maharaja’s palace designed by London architect. |
